Obituary for Peter A. "Big Pete" Nason

CARMEL - Peter “Big Pete” A. Nason Sr., 73, passed away March 9, 2022 at his home in Carmel surrounded by his family, following a nearly 3 year battle with lung cancer. He was born June 18, 1948, in Bangor, the son of Myron A. and Luena A. (Littlefield) Nason.

Peter graduated from Bangor High School, Class of 1966. After graduation, he married Sandra L. King of Winterport. The couple settled in Winterport where they resided for 25 years, Raising 3 children. Peter worked in the construction field as a carpenter and later as a Job Superintendant. His work took him all over New England. His love of the outdoors was instilled in his family from many fishing, hunting and camping adventures, usually with a Big Pete twist. In addition to the outdoor he had an affection for hot rods, boats and various projects and enjoyed building and driving them though out his life.

In his later professional life he worked as a carpenter for a dear family friend at Billings Diesel and Marine in Stonington until his retirement in 2015. This shift in work opened the family to a new group of people as the couple relocated to Stonington for nearly 10 years. Peter’s outgoing personality served him well, quickly making friends with many coworkers and towns people. It was not long and many on the Island knew who Big Pete was. From baking fresh bread to sharing the bounty of his very fruitful garden, his generosity endeared him in the hearts of many. He was never afraid to share his opinion as all who knew him would come to realize. His ability to put his own spin on everything was not always well received. Those around him did quickly come to understand that the Big Pete way was often a reinvention in the making. Occasionally becoming so caught up in the reinvention and discussion that ensued, that the original goal was completely overlooked in the process. This was all secondary to his love of gathering with family and friends to cook, tell stories, enjoy music and have the good time!

Surviving in addition to his wife Sandra (King) Nason, are his daughter, Traci Cates and her husband, Paul, of Stetson; sons, Peter Nason Jr. and his wife, Stacey, of Carmel, and Aaron Nason, of Winterport; four beautiful granddaughters; Lauren Evans and her husband, Shawn, of Newburgh, Jessica Kelley and her husband, Trevor, of Plymouth, Emily Fichera and her husband, Charlie, of Eddington, Sara Nason and her partner, Jesse Boulier, of Carmel; seven great grandchildren, Chance Evans, Jordyn Kelley, Oakley Evans, Riley Evans, Madison Boulier, Erin Evans and Elliot Fichera.

A Celebration of Life (pig roast and party) is planned for June at his home in Carmel, for more details contact a family member.
