Obituary for Joan Theresa Tidd

Joan Theresa Tidd

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Theresa Tidd on January 16.

Joan was born on November 23, 1939 to James and Doris (Daigle) Thibodeau in Van Buren, ME and was the oldest of three. Joan graduated from Saint Agatha High School in 1957. Following graduation, Joan attended cosmetology school in Bangor. It was through a classmate that she met the love of her life, Wilbur. They married in Van Buren on August 27, 1962 and lived in Hodgdon. Three years later they moved to Hampden, calling it home for 57 years. Even after moving to Hampden, Joan and Wilbur made sure their family roots remained in the County with a camp they built in Island Falls.
Joan lived a full life as a spirited wife, wonderful mother, and hairdresser. Joan, an avid crafter, gifted many with her canvas yarn art and hand sewn quilts. She was highly skilled with knitting needles and crochet hooks, creating blankets that grace our homes today.

Joan’s kitchen was always filled with aromas that made stomachs rumble. Tourtière pies, biscuits, and beef stew were just some of the amazing comfort foods Joan cooked for her family. Celebrations were made extra special when Joan made and decorated cakes with her Wilton cake decorating supplies. She enjoyed sharing her cooking secrets, passing down family recipes from one generation to the next.
If Wilbur and her children were her heart, then it was her grandchildren that made her heart smile. At every opportunity, Joan or Mimmie, would spend time with her grandchildren outdoors, teaching them how to grow plants and vegetables, pick berries from bushes around camp, and leave strands of colorful yarn on trees for birds to collect and use to build colorful nests.

Joan has left an indelible mark on our hearts. She is described by friends as original, plain spoken and so entertaining. Family members would say that Joan was bold and feisty. Granddaughter Allisyn shares, “I don’t think I’ll go a day in my life without thinking of Mimmie. She’s influenced everything I like, everything I do.”
Joan is survived by her husband of 60 years Wilbur Tidd. Her children Michelle Cribbs and her husband Jim and daughter Tina; Kurt Tidd and his wife Sue and their daughters Stephanie, and Samantha; and Andy Tidd and his wife Shelly and their children Drew, Morghen, Bayleigh, Allisyn, and Autumn. Joan’s sister, Katheen Thibodeau and brother, Bobby Thibodeau and his daughter Heather and her husband Todd and their children Tyler and Kayla.

A celebration of Joan will take place at a later date. Joan has a special affinity with the Shriners Hospital in Springfield, MA, and The Alzheimer’s Association, if you would like to make a donation in her memory to either organization.
