Obituary for Joan B. Douglass

BANGOR - Joan B. Douglass, 94, passed away peacefully December 3, 2022, surrounded by her much-loved family. Joan was born March 2, 1928, in Fort Fairfield, Maine, the daughter of Ray and Amanda (Wark) Hockenhull. She was very proud of being from “The County”.

After moving from Fort Fairfield to Orono when a senior in high school, she became a hairdresser which is how she met her husband, Charles Douglass. They were married June 3, 1950. Together, they settled in Hermon and raised four children. They were married 49 years before his death in 1999. Joan made the best of the years after Charlie died and continued to have a life filled with family and friends.
She lost her father when she was only ten years old and grew up during the Great Depression. Those early years taught her about hard work and the importance of family. One could not have asked for a better role model. She had such a close bond with her parents, siblings, husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Joan knew how to have a good time. She was always up for an adventure but loved nothing more than family-time. She was simply fun, made us laugh, and her entire family enjoyed being with her. She didn’t take herself too seriously and realized the most important things in life weren’t really things (except maybe her iPad).
She was very creative. Memories of her will live on as we cuddle up in her handmade quilts, put up holiday decorations she created over decades or just stay warm in her knitted hats, mittens and scarfs.

Joan is survived by her children, Ray Douglass and his wife, Millie, of Hermon, Paul Douglass and his wife, Debbie, of Bullhead City, Arizona, Randy Douglass and his wife, Lynn, of Levant, and Diane Tinsman and her husband, Richard, of Hampden. She was a wonderful mother and a fun, loving Nana. She is survived by grandchildren, Tammy Brown, Kerri Latlippe, Jamie Dempsey, Brent Douglass, Rustin Douglass and Ryan Douglass. She was also so fortunate to be such a part of her great-grandchildren’s lives: Robert, Jacob and Julia Brown and Mariah and Sydney Latlippe. Joan had very special relationships with numerous nieces and nephews, many of whom were able to visit with her in her final weeks. She is survived by a very special brother-in-law, Dale Douglass and his daughters, Kim and Karen.

In addition to her parents and husband, Joan was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Roberta Douglass; brothers, Robert and his wife, Natalie and James Hockenhull and his wife, Rose; sisters, Mae Clement and her husband, Thomas, and Erma Lucci and her husband, Fred. She was also predeceased by in-laws, David and Daisy Douglass, Darrell Douglass and his wife, Pat, Ada Burke and her husband Albert, and Natalie Douglass. Living until 94 meant she also lost many dear friends throughout the years, including her special friend, Paula Garland.

Joan spent the last year of her life at Eastside Rehab in Bangor. The care, compassion and love by the staff gave her much joy and provided immeasurable comfort to her family in her final days.

Mom always wanted her obituary to simply state “She lived, she died, good day”. We added a bit more.

The family will be hosting a Memorial Gathering for Joan on Monday, December 12, 2022, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Morgan Hill Event Center, 82 Morgan Hill Lane, Hermon, Maine. Light refreshments will be served and memories of Joan will be shared. Those who wish to remember Joan in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the Eastside Rehab Patient Activity Fund, C/O Robert Cleaves at 516 Mt. Hope Ave., Bangor, ME 04401. Interment will be private in the spring.
