Obituary for Barbara Merry-Davis

NEWPORT - Barbara Merry-Davis passed away peacefully after a brief illness April 4, 2022, at a Bangor hospital. She was born March 14, 1922 in Etna, the daughter of Charles and Gertrude (Sylvester) Gordon.
Barbara graduated from Nokomis Regional High School, Class of 1940. Following graduation, she married Ed Littlefield, and settled in Newport; they had four children. After divorcing her first husband, she raised her children for many years before marrying John Merry Jr., in 1962.

Barbara started making hooked rugs in the ‘70s and became somewhat famous in the Folk Art world. This was her crowning achievement; making hundreds of rugs with historic and personal meaning selling for hundreds and later, thousands of dollars all over the country.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her brother, Charlie Gordon; sisters, Charlotte Hatch, Pauline Nickerson, Jackie Francis; and daughter, Nancy Armstrong Scott. She is survived by her children, Doug Littlefield, Ed Littlefield, Sarah Nickerson, John Merry III; many nieces, nephews and many grand and great-grandchildren. She had a productive and healthy life and will be greatly missed by all those who knew her. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a date and time to be announced. Those wishing to remember Barbara in a special way may make gifts in her name to the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, P.O. Box 1101 Bangor, ME 04402.
